Job offers pour in with attractive pay package
Even as the Euro debt crisis and uncertainty in US economy continue, top IT companies seem to recruit thousands of final-year engineering students from various higher education institutions in the state this year.
Accenture, Wipro and Cognizant have jointly offered a whopping 3,603 offers to over 2,700 students within the first three days of campus placements, creating a record for placements among deemed universities in the country.
Of the 850 companies to whom Indian Institute of Technology - Madras had sent invitations for this year’s placement, which starts on December 1, over 50 companies have responded until now, compared to about 40 last year.
VIT University vice-president G.V. Sampath said almost all students have two job offers, which shows the high quality of students in the college. “We provide them (students) high-quality, soft skills training to make them industry-ready, which helped the students become just that.”
Mr Sampath also said, “Flipkart has completed campus placement by offering jobs to four students at Rs 12.5 lakh per year, while DE Shaw, a software company, which is yet to conduct its drive, offered Rs 14.5 lakh per year.”
Mr Samuel Rajkumar, deputy director (placement), VIT University, said, “A total of 150 to 160 companies attend placement drive at the university every year. Last year, 188 companies absorbed 95 per cent of students,” he said.
Shravan, a final-year student who got placed in one of the three IT companies, said companies had a rigorous recruitment process, which was tough to clear.
“They seem to be interested in quality than quantity, which was evident from the type of questions they asked.
The head-hunters wanted to know whether we are experts in our subjects, besides testing our aptitude to learn,” he said.
The situation in IIT Madras also seems to be better this year. The institute’s placement office has sent invitations to more than 850 companies this year, compared to 650 last year.
Of the 850 companies, over 50 confirmed participation in the placement drive, which would start on December 1.
