Jaya okays Rs109 cr projects to ease city congestion
In order to decongest roads in Chennai city and its suburbs, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday announced various projects including road overbridges, flyovers, pedestrian subways and skywalk at the cost of Rs109 crore.
An official release said that a new flyover would be constructed on the intersection of Jawaharlal Nehru Salai and Kaliamman Koil Street near CMBT to decongest the busy junction at the cost of Rs40 crore.
Vehicles piling up during peak hours is a common feature as cars and two-wheelers compete with buses for space at the junction there.
Motorists from Vadapalani proceeding towards Anna Nagar who often wait for long hours in the traffic would take the flyover near CMBT. “The flyover will be modelled after the one in Meenambakkam,” a highways department official said. The release said that the first-of-its-kind skywalk connecting Central, Park railway station and the GH would come up at the cost of `20 crore.
