Jaya has big plans for women self help groups
In an attempt to provide women self-help groups (SHGs) better opportunities to market their products at national and global level, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Sunday ordered creation of a state supply and marketing society and allocated Rs 15 lakh for implementation of the scheme.
She also allotted Rs 77.5 lakh to ensure efficiency of the existing district level supply and marketing societies.An official release here stated that Ms Jayalalithaa has directed the setting up of a state supply and marketing society aimed to increase the sale of the products of women SHGs by promoting their products and finding new markets at the state, national and international level.
The CM has allocated Rs 15 lakh towards setting up of the committee. The products of women SHGs are currently being marketed by district supply and marketing societies.
This apart, the CM has sanctioned Rs 77.50 lakh for strengthening the district societies functioning in 31 districts at the rate of Rs 2.5 lakh each.
She has also directed that the functioning of the district level societies should be in coordination with the proposed state level society.
This initiative would help improve the lives of 85.70 lakh women with the 5.56-lakh SHGs.
The AIADMK government in 1991-92 had initiated the concept of SHGs, the press release added.
