It’s not jackal’s day after it bites youth
A youth playing cricket at Perungudi on Sunday mistook a jackal for a dog and was bitten after he made an attempt to chase the wild animal.
Returning after a game, Santosh sighted the animal resting beneath a bush. Santhosh (21), working in an export firm, said he was shocked when what he believed was a dog started charging at him.
As soon as the animal pounced on me, two more jackals joined and started howling, he said. According to wildlife sources, Santhosh, being in his early twenties, managed to escape with a not-too-deep bite in the neck.
The local residents later stoned the jackal to death. The version of Mr David Raj, forest ranger, city wildlife headquarters, Velachery, was that the youth had thrown a stone at the jackal.Perungudi and Pallikaranai, located adjacent to Guindy national park, have supported a good population of jackals.
But, wildlife sources said, the public in Perungudi Telephone Nagar have constructed homes encroaching on jackal habitat.
