Isolated showers in city, no rain predicted next few days
For Coimbatore-resident A. Pranav, who reached Chennai on Tuesday, it was a pleasant surprise to get drenched in rain. “I was apprehensive of the scorching heat in Chennai.
But it turned out to be lovely day,” he said. While the first showers this monsoon season gladdened the city residents, it also caught many off guard.
“When I got down from the college bus, I was surprised to see the sharp drizzle. I walked home enjoying the rains, much to the anger of my mother, who was rushing her way to the bus stop with two umbrellas,” said S. Cynthia, a BDS student in Tiruvanmiyur.
However, met officials say that rain may not continue in Chennai. “Even though it rains in most parts of Kerala and Karnataka, Tamil Nadu falls in the rain shadow region and so there will only be isolated rains and thunderstorms,” said Regional Meteorological Centre’s Area Cyclone Warning Centre director Dr S.R. Ramanan.
He said there are no visible traces of rain or cyclone in the near future. “On Monday, moist air was coming in and so clouds were formed. But since Tuesday morning, the clouds have cleared and we don’t expect any continuous rainfall,” he added.
While Nungambakkam recorded 37.2 degree Celsius, Meenambakkam registered 38.1 degree Celsius on Tuesday. “The rains are only due to convectional activities,” Mr Ramanan noted.
Dr Y. E. A. Raj, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), said rainfall was confined to a few areas in the city.
“During southwest monsoon, we cannot predict how much rain a particular place will receive. In all, there will only be four or five rainy days, where the recorded rainfall would be more than 2.5 cms,” he added.
