Important roads in Villivakkam lack pavements
The Red Hills road and Reddy road in Villivakkam lack proper pavements despite being important roads connecting the railway station and bus terminus.
Thousands of commuters daily use Red Hills road which is the main link road connecting the Villivakkam railway station but it does not have a pavement, while Villivakkam bus terminus, located on Reddy road, is narrow and occupied by hawkers and shops.
Traffic flow on Red Hills road has increased following the opening of the vehicular subway, which links the northern and southern parts of Villivakkam. “Lack of pavements on Red Hills road causes a lot of inconvenience to pedestrians who are forced to walk in the path of the vehicles.
The road being narrow does not help and pedestrians’ life is at risk more often than not,” complained Mr S. Sadagopan, a resident of Rajaji nagar said.
Adding to the woes, the construction of stormwater drains in the entire stretch has shrunk the road and made matters worse for pedestrians, he said.
Mr N. Srinivasan, a resident of Villivakkam, said the pavement is only two feet wide. “Even the narrow pavement is either encroached upon by hawkers or shops located on the road, leaving little or no space for pedestrians,” he said.
A corporation official said after removal of encroachments along Red Hills road, they would widen and new pavements would be built.
The official said steps would be taken to remove encroachments on Reddy road also.
