‘I-T officials’ escape with Rs 43 L
The owner of a departmental store in the city was relieved of Rs 43 lakh on Monday morning by four men who entered his house at Ambedkar Nagar, Ernavur, posing as income tax officials.
Four well-dressed men reached the house of Kanagaraj, 55, in an SUV around 7 am. They showed “identity cards” to support their claim that they were from the I-T department and began their search of the house after asking the family members, including Kanagaraj’s wife Jaya and daughter Priya, to switch off their cellphones.
The “I-T officials” opened the bureau in one bedroom, took the cash, and asked Kanagaraj to collect it later after submitting documents at the IT office.
“The ‘I-T officials’ took only cash and left behind nearly 1 kg of gold worth over `25 lakh,” Kanagaraj said and claimed that he mobilised the money through chit funds and had also pledged his daughter’s jewellery for setting up a store for his son.
After the “officials” left the building, which also houses his store, Kanagaraj tried calling the number given by the “taxmen” but that could not be reached.
The number was found to be from Kerala. Enquiries at the I-T office later revealed that Kanagaraj, vice-president of the Ernavur Traders Association, was taken for a ride.
