House sees heated health debate
The Assembly witnessed acrimonious debate between Opposition DMDK and treasury benches over the healthcare delivery in government-run hospitals. Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, who intervened, said all government hospitals across Tamil Nadu would be developed on par with corporate hospitals.
Lashing out at the DMDK for “needlessly faulting the government” she said, intervening during the debate on the demand for grants for health department on Thursday, during her previous tenure she had improved the infrastructure at the GH here and provided it with modern equipment. “But since the last five year rule of the DMK, the healthcare delivery at the GH suffered a setback due to neglect,” she charged.
She also took exception to DMDK members for their earlier remark that she had meant only corporate hospitals when she stated that ‘Chennai has become the health capital of India.’ “Member K. A.
Sekhar is levelling baseless charges with an ulterior motive. Chennai has been meeting the medical needs of even VVIPs from other parts of India and abroad. This is a matter of pride for all Tamils. It is totally wrong to undervalue government hospitals,” she said.
The treasury benches protested when DMDK legislators tried to counter the CM and made a remark which was expunged by Speaker D Jayakumar. Joining the issue, AISMK founder R. Sarathkumar said, “Even DMDK founder Vijayakanth was rushed to Apollo hospital during a shoot of his film. The DMDK has no locus standi to comment on others.”
Mr Panneerselvam said his wife had been undergoing treatment with Dr Myilvahanan Natarajan, vice-chancellor of Dr MGR medical university, for the last 10 years. “You have no locus standi to comment when your leader’s relative has started a medical college in Puducherry,” he shot back.
Refuting Mr. Sekhar’s claim, health minister Dr V. S. Vijay said the government Stanley hospital had performed maximum number of liver transplants.
