Hired killers in auto hack biz man to death
A businessman was hacked to death allegedly by a group of hired killers in Arumbakkam on Monday night.
Mohamed Rafeeq, 40, a resident of Periyar Pathai in Choolaimedu, was in the fish trade and also headed an association of businessmen belonging to the minority community.
He was going home on his bike from his mansion building on 100 Feet Road in Arumbakkam after collecting details of daily accounts around 10.45 pm when three youth pushed him from the bike and hacked him before fleeing in an autorickshaw.
“One man, Akbar Basha, surrendered in court in Egmore on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the case. We will have to take him into custody and question him to learn more about the murder,” police said.
Recently Rafeeq’s association had set up a thanner pandal to provide water to public during summer.
“Two of the office bearers of the association had found that their names were not on the banner that had been set up at the thanner pandal.
They were very angry and had an heated argument with Mohamed Rafeeq. We are also trying to find out whether or not this quarrel had led to the murder,” the police said.
The two who had an argument with the deceased were not found at home, the police said.
Rafeeq was also heading an association of fish merchants in MMDA colony earlier.
He was also listed as an accused in a murder, but was acquitted in that case, the police said.
He is survived by a wife and three children.
