HC moved to suspend DSP for assault
An advocate has approached the Madras high court to suspend a deputy superintendent of police, Dharmapuri, and prosecute him for allegedly assaulting a woman, who participated in the protest against authorities for refusing to issue application forms for the Teachers Eligibility Test on March 27.
A division bench of Chief Justice M. Y. Eqbal and Justice T. S. Sivagnanam before whom the PIL filed by advocate P. Pugalenthi came up for hearing, ordered notice to the state government and posted after four weeks further hearing of the case.
According to Pugalenthi, on March 27, the whole world witnessed through TV channels a shocking incident occurred on a public road at Dharmapuri. Mr Santhana Pandian, DSP, Dharmapuri was seen slapping Karunamoorthy and assaulting a woman (Jeeva, wife of Karunamoorthy) when a large number of people around them were helpless. The DSP assaulted them under the guise of discharging his duty as DSP. The attack made by him was in full public view.
By attacking them, the DSP has committed an offence punishable under section 4 of the TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to women with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word or gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC. The state home secretary and DGP were aware of the incident. They ought to have immediately proceeded against the DSP in accordance with law.
