Gold worth Rs 44L looted
More than 200 sovereigns of gold worth nearly Rs 44 lakh was looted in two separate incidents in the southern suburbs of the city on Saturday night.
In MF Nagar near Tamabaram, at least 120 sovereigns of gold ornaments and a diamond-studded ring were burgled from the house of a senior software engineer in Chembakkam.
Abdul Muthaleef, 36, found the valuables missing when he and his family members, who had left on Saturday night, came home on Sunday afternoon after attending a function at his sister’s house in Perungudi.
The burglars had used the two-wheeler belonging to Abdul Muthaleef’s wife to escape with the loot, police said.
In Kottivakkam, cash and gold ornaments weighing more than 80 sovereigns were reported stolen from the bungalow of a marine engineer late in the evening on Saturday when the residents of the house had left for dinner to celebrate the birthday of a relative.
The burglars consumed a bottle of foreign liquor kept in the fridge and some snacks, according to police, and even washed the plates that they used to eat snacks at the house in AGS Colony.
Muthazhagu and his family came home around 11 pm and found the front door of their house broke open, according to police. They found gold and more than Rs 70,000 in cash, which was kept in the bureau in the room, missing.
“It seems the burglary was not committed by one person. It is not easy for one person to break open the heavy front door. So it seems that a gang had executed the burglary after carefully planning it when the residents were away,” the police said.
