Gold for garbage on the beach
It was raining gold and silver coins in Marina Beach on Sunday. 150 persons who picked plastic bags and other plastic waste products in the Marina beach got lucky silver coins and three got one gram gold coins as they won the lucky draw contest jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu pollution control board, Chennai corporation and the Chennai Plastic Manufacturers Association.
This ‘gold for garbage’ programme was conducted as part of awareness events on plastic segregation in the city.
The public was informed about reducing and reusing the plastic products and segregation of plastic waste at household level.
TNPCB officials said that the ‘gold for garbage’ event would be organised in all districts to spread awareness.
Chennai district environment engineer Ms R. Sarasavani said that many parents and children took part in the contest with enthusiasm.
“The response was amazing. Participants picked up plastic bottles, bags and all kinds of plastic items found in the beach and filled nearly 200 big dustbins there,” she said. Plastic collected through this event would be used to lay roads in Chennai.
City corporation mayor Saidai Duraisamy and environment minister B.V. Ramana gave away the gold and silver coins to the winners.
