In a bid to address environmental issues in the city, a group of enterprising students from G.D.M.H.S.S and Vidya Niketan M.H.S.S in Coimbatore have joined hands to launch an environment preservation initiative aptly titled ‘Greenprint Coimbatore’.

Over the last 7 months, these enthusiastic youngsters have been conducting a series of activities designed to increase awareness among residents on eco-preservation and nature conservation.

Says Arpita Lulla, a 12th student of Vidya Niketan whose brainchild was Greenprint Coimbatore, “When I was selected for the finals of the Horlicks Whiz Kid contest, I had to come up with an innovative project; this prompted me to start this group along with some friends of mine.

We put up street plays at 3 schools in the city on the theme ‘Elements of The Future’ personifying how resources like water etc were dwindling due to the negative effects of pollutants.

The response was amazing and I think our message went through to many of the students who watched us perform.

We also teamed up with ITC to conduct a ‘Wealth Out of Waste’ recycling event where we collected nearly 400 kgs of paper to use it further.”

She adds, “As the holidays are on, we hope to come up with more ventures like this- maybe a scrap fest at the mall where most people usually hang out, or repeat performances of our street play to a wider section of the public.”

Sourabh Banthia, a 12th grader at G.D.M.H.S.S remarks, “Our interactive sessions with other school students helped us brainstorm and find out what other issues needed addressing.

We came up with a logo for Greenprint Coimbatore, distributed car stickers and conducted a road awareness program where we urged vehicle owners to drive safe.

We held a nature camp at the Race Course ground where we encouraged people to save our precious natural resources, collecting signatures to endorse the campaign.

It feels good to be part of such a worthy initiative, and we’ve had great fun doing all this too!”
