Gandhi statue on Marina to get a facelift
The state government will take up the improvement works on the Mahatma Gandhi’s statue and the area surrounding it on Kamaraj Salai in the city and also the Kamaraj memorial in Kanyakumari at a total cost of Rs48.95 lakhs.
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced that the statue of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on the Marina stretch would be renovated and repaired at a cost of Rs11.95 lakh.
The marble stones around the statue’s pedestal would be replaced with new ones and stainless steel ladder would be erected behind the statue. Additional lighting would be provided and colourful flower pots would be kept around the statue, according to an official release here. The statue will be given a fresh coat of paint.
The former chief minister Kamaraj’s memorial in Kanyakumari would be renovated at a cost of `37 lakh.
The compound wall and the concrete surface would be relaid besides laying stainless steel handles. In addition, a garden with adequate water facilities, electrical works, decorative works would be taken up at the memorial.
The press release further stated that the government headed by chief minister Ms. J. Jayalalithaa has been taking several measures to preserve the memorials of leaders who fought for the nation.
