Free summer camp to enlighten kids
Though many summer camps for children are run almost like extra curricular activities in school and not many run for free, two service organisations seem to be an exception.
They have launched a free camp for children emphasising on cultural values and overcoming the problems in life.
“We want students to gainfully utilise the summer vacation to learn about the religion and rich culture and become self-disciplined,” says V. Subramanian secretary, Chennai, Jana Kalyan, which teamed up with Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Chennapuri Baktha Jana Samajam in organising the camp at Shankaralaya on Spur Tank Road here from May 1.
Interestingly, noted Tamil music director and lyricist Gangai Amaran who was the special guest at the camp told the nearly 120 boys and girls that the benefits of chanting slokas are numerous.
The students were also introduced to the realm of yoga, when Satyananda Centre, Triplicane, taught the nuances of yoga which help to improve health and longevity.
While volunteers of Hindu Janajakruthi Samithi explained Hindu culture, professors of Sanskrita Bharati taught the children Sanskrit.
“The camp is not monotonous. Here we get to listen to stories and learn morals,” a student said.
Children can draw inspiration from anecdotes from Hindu mythology.
The co-ordinators are having plans to organise a similar camp for elderly people on May 7.
