Four hydro projects waiting to see green
Electricity minister Natham R. Viswanathan on Thursday said the Centre and the Karnataka government’s non-cooperation had delayed the setting up of the four hydro power stations along the Cauvery.
“The government had sent proposals for establishing four hydro electric power stations between Sivasamudram in Karnataka and Mettur in TN through National Hydroelectric Power Corporation in 2008 itself. But, Karnataka has not been co-operating and has not given its consent yet.
The Centre is also indifferent to us,” the minister said in a reply to a query raised by CPI member N. Nanjappan in the assembly.
“Because of Centre’s indifference, we are not getting over 1,150 MW of power,” he said.
The state had sent proposals to establish four hydroelectric power stations one each in Sivasamudram (270 MW), Meghadhatu (400 MW), Rasimanal (360 MW) and Hogenakkal (120 MW) along the Cauvery through National Hydroelectric Power Corporation on December 15, 2008, he said.
Responding to another query, he said the state government was considering setting up windmills in the sea, as studies by the Centre in this regard were in progress.
“Centre for Wind Energy Technology is doing a study on the possibility of establishing windmills in the sea. It would take a couple of years.
But, we have requested the Centre to speedup the process,” he said. The government would also take action to generate power from tidal waves, he said.
