The city police has arrested five persons in connection with the case where four of them posed as income tax officials and took away Rs 43 lakh from the house of a department store owner in Ambedkar Ernavur.

The police also recovered Rs 33 lakh from those arrested.Four well-dressed men, who claimed to be from the income tax department, had reached the house of Kanagaraj, 55, in an SUV at 7 am on May 21 and taken away Rs 43 lakh from him.

The accused had shown “identity cards” to support their claim that they were from the IT department and began their search inside the house after asking the inmates, including Kanagaraj’s wife Jaya and daughter Priya to switch off their cell phones. The “IT” officials opened the bureau, took only the cash and left behind nearly 1 kg of gold worth more than Rs 25 lakh.

Those arrested, who included one associate of the four, were identified as Murugan, 56, of Periaypalayam, Jayavelu, 42, of Ernavur, Karthikeyan, 34, from Thanjavur, Vijayendran, 32 and Maharaja, 23 of Kumbakonam.

The police has also recovered the SUV that the accused had used to commit the crime. The investigators are looking for others who could be involved in similar kinds of crimes, according to P. Thamrai Kannan, additional commissioner of police , law and order.

“It seems that all those who were arrested had worked in different groups and were involved in several similar crimes. We have to conduct a detailed inquiry to find out about the other crimes,” he said.

During an inquiry, an ex-convict told the police that Murugan and the other members of the gang could have pulled off the heist and when police showed Murugan’s photograph to Kanagaraj he immediately identified the robber.
