Encroachments block traffic
Unchecked encroachments by hotels and eateries on the road and footpath opposite Perambur Railway Station continue to result in traffic disruption on the arterial Perambur High Road, causing inconvenience to the passengers alighting from MTC buses and commuters heading to the station.
Traffic police personnel and civic officials are aware of the significance of the road, but have turned a blind eye, laments a civic activist seeking anonymity.
The wide road on which the railway station that serves hundreds of passengers in and around Perambur, and the bus terminus are situated has become a narrow stretch because of the callous attitude of corporation and traffic police officials, forcing motorists and pedestrians struggle for space, he complains.
Haphazard parking by the visitors to the hotels on the road and unabated encroachments has completely eaten up the pavement meant for pedestrians as well as a large portion of the road, causing hindrance to the smooth flow of traffic.
“The hotels and eateries have cordoned off the road and blocked the platform by earmarking the space. They have also posted a guard to protect their ‘parking’ space,” says G. Kamalakkannan, a state government official.
MTC drivers are also irked by the unmindful encroachments on this stretch. “Crossing this stretch has become an arduous task because of the space crunch and the passengers find it difficult to get off from the bus as there are only a few inches left for them to move. We have to stop the vehicle on the right corner of the road, because of the encroachments, disrupting the movement of other vehicles and ultimately causing a traffic jam,” says a driver.
