Encroachment eats up Velachery
It looks like the people of Velachery would have to put up with the rampant encroachments in their area for some more time as the civic and state highway authorities are playing the blame-game.
Pedestrians using the Velachery-Taramani link road are put to severe hardship since encroachments force them to walk on the highway, risking their lives. Motorists complain of congestion as encroachments eat into road space.
Shopkeepers have invaded both sides of the road. There is a risk of being knocked down by speeding vehicles, laments Mr S. Praveen, a software professional.
“Motorists find it difficult to cross the stretch because of poor lighting and potholes,” he said.
“One side of the Velachery-Taramani link road is narrow, while the other side is wide. From SRP tools to Vijayanagar bus terminus, the stretch witnesses heavy congestion during peak hours,” complained Mr Gopalakrishnan, an RTI activist.
“The road was once wide but because of poor maintenance and unchecked encroachments, it has become narrow. It is the responsibility of the authorities to maintain the road. They should not expect the public to make representations,” he said.
A senior corporation official maintained that the road lies within the purview of the state highways department.
