Eligibility test a tough nut to crack, say upset teachers

Several teachers who wrote the teacher eligibility test on Thursday expressed disappointment about the level of difficulty of mathematics questions asked.
About 6.5 lakh teachers and teacher aspirants took the test, the first time it is being conducted in Tamil Nadu as the Right to Education Act mandates such an eligibility test for teachers.
Many candidates complained that the question paper was too long, but officials said that it was probably because they were not used to optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets, which took them longer to mark the right answers.
“We were not able to answer most of the questions as it was very tough and time consuming. We felt mathematics to be too tough. We have to keep trying continuously until we clear the examination as it decides our fate,” said Lakshmi, a teacher.
Some elderly teachers faced difficulty in using the OMR sheets. “I’ve never seen an OMR sheet earlier. There was a photocopy of how it would look like and my son who is an engineer now and has attended several competitive examinations taught me how to shade it.
However, I did not expect it to take so much time to shade the bubbles,” said Mangai Senthuram, a 40-year-old teacher.
“If you want good quality teachers we need to have higher level of difficulty in questions. As this is the first time we are conducting this examination we have increased the difficulty level. With teachers feedback we will review the difficulty level,” sources in TRB said.
