Duo held for duping people of Rs 69 lakh

A 43-year-old teacher of a government school and his wife were arrested for allegedly cheating people to the tune of Rs 69 lakh, after promising them land, according the city police.

Based on a complaint from the accused’s land lady from Madhuravoyil, the police arrested Periya Nayagam and Karthika, who had taken money upto Rs 5 lakh on various occasions promising a big share in their sari business.

When asked for the money, the victim was told that since the business did not go as well as expected, she would be given land only if she gave them another Rs 3 lakh, police said.

Since the complainant did not get her share of land, she, and others who had by then given `69 lakh to the couple, filed a complaint with the police.Police is investigating further.
