DMK MPs, MLAs to meet next week
DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday said that the candidates for the post of President and Vice-President were decided based on the prevailing situation and not on any regional considerations.
“For the post of President and Vice-President, persons are not picked on any regional consideration. We have made the recommendations based on the (prevailing) situation and atmosphere (for the presidential candidate),” Mr Karunanidhi told reporters here.
He was answering a query if his party would seek nomination of a candidate from south India after Congress propped up Vice-President Hamid Ansari’s name for a second term.
Maintaining that the choice of candidates for such high posts should not be guided by regional factors, Karunanidhi said the same yardstick would be applied for the Vice-President’s post also.
Meanwhile, DMK has convened a meeting of its MLAs and MPs next week for a consultation on the July 19 presidential poll.
MPs and MLAs of DMK, which was one of the first UPA constituents to back the front’s nominee Pranab Mukherjee, will meet to discuss voting for the election on July 17 at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam, Karunanidhi said in a statement here.
DMK has 23 MLAs in the AIADMK-dominated state assembly. It has 18 MPs in Lok Sabha and seven in Rajya Sabha.
