DMK condemns partymen’s arrest

Condemning the detention of former minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam under the Goondas Act, DMK on Monday announced that it would convene an emergency meeting of its executive committee on June 22 to decided on the future course of action against the ruling government.
In a statement issued here, DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan said party president M. Karunanidhi would chair the meeting to be held at Anna Arivalayam.
A party release condemned the ruling party for invoking the Goondas Act against Arumugam, DMK’s Salem district secretary, and arresting Madurai district secretary Thalapathi in a fresh case soon after he obtained bail in another case.
Stating that DMK would no longer tolerate such oppressive measures, the release said the executive committee meeting would decide the party’s protest against the ruling regime.
Senior DMK leaders and former ministers, including K. Ponmudi, K. N. Nehru, I. Periyasamy, M. R. K. Pannerselvam and some district secretaries have been arrested on various charges including landgrab.
Earlier, Mr Karunanidhi told reporters that work towards organising the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (Teso) conference at Villupuram in August was progressing.
DMK secy thalapathi re-arrested
The district secretary of DMK K. Thalapathi was re-arrested on Monday along with four others on landgrab charges, barely a couple of days after he was released on conditional bail.
The arrests, according to a press note issued by the Madurai district police, have been made for alleged illegal dealings pertaining to land belonging to employees of Meenakshi Mills and valued at about Rs 20crore.
The arrests come on the basis of investigations launched on receipt of a complaint given by one Mr Balaraman, assistant secretary of ex-employees of Meenakshi Mills Welfare Association to V. Balakrishnan, superintendent of police, Madurai.
The land given by the government was on the condition that any change therein will have to be done with the prior approval of the government. When the government wanted to acquire the land, the company said it was earmarked for employees.
The company however refused to hand it over to the local civic body as stipulated by the then existing laws.
The company was subsequently acquired by GHCL in 1995, whose directors R.S. Jalan and Sivasubramanian, finance manager Srinivsan and general manager Malairasan entered into a conspiracy to sell the land in violation of the conditions.
Using a general power of attorney and armed with fake documents, Jalan and Srinivsan sold the 3.83acre of land for Rs 1.64 crore to Jat Real Estate, one of whose shareholders is Thalapathi, who in turn converted it into 87 plots and sold them at a price of Rs 2lakh to Rs 3 lakh for a cent.
Others who were arrested are Malairasan, Venkatesan (Thalapathi’s relative), M.P.R. Ravichandran, 52 and Krishnapandi.
