DMDK MLA held for encroachment
Tiruttani MLA Arun Subramaniam (DMDK) was arrested in a land grab case in Thiruvallur near here on Wednesday.
This is the first time that a MLA of the main Opposition party has been arrested in a land grab case though many senior leaders from DMK had been arrested in the last one year, particularly after complaints of land grabbing started pouring in after the new AIADMK government promised to restore land to original owners.
The first-time legislator was picked up by a police team comprising senior police officials at around 6 am on Wednesday for allegedly encroaching on a township road in Varadaraja Nagar in Thiruvallur on the Cooum river-bank and constructing a go-down on the encroached land.
“The arrest was based on a complaint received two days back from local residents who had pointed out that the MLA had grabbed the land meant for a municipality road and constructed a go-down there. We found the complaint to be true and registered a case. The MLA was arrested on Wednesday morning,” said a police official.
According to police sources the team led by DIG Ganesha Moorthy and his subordinates had reached the house of Mr Subramaniam at around 4 am and waited till 6 am, when the MLA came out, before taking him to Vellaivedu police station, where he was told that he was being arrested for a land grab case. He was later produced in a court in Thiruvallur and remanded to judicial custody in Puzhal prison.
