Delayed subway work irks residents
Non-completion of the Monegar Choultry Road vehicular subway project near Government Stanley Medical College even after four years of its launch irks local residents.
The work on the subway, jointly implemented by the Chennai corporation and the railways, began in March 2008 but has missed several deadlines.
The corporation had set a deadline of April last year and subsequently extended it to July. Later, the corporation council extended the deadline to September 2011. With the delay in completion of the work, the estimated cost of the project has gone up from `9.25 crore in 2006 to Rs15.75 crore.
The delay was mainly due to the slow progress of execution on the part of the railways, which began its work only in March 2010. Suspension of work during monsoon season also delayed the project.
The two-way subway would be 359 metres long and 8 metres wide. Corporation sources said that the railways have not yet completed the portion of work beneath the track.
“Only after the railways complete their work, we will be able to finish service lanes and portion of approach road,” source said. Once the works are over, motorists could reach Broadway without taking a circuitous route of passing through Mint junction and Royapuram railway overbridge.
