Death due to kite thread, 23 held

Chennai police began a crackdown on kite sellers and arrested as many as 23 people as selling kites is banned.

This comes in the wake of caterer Raj Kumar of Bihar dying when a glass-laced kite string slashed his neck as he was traveling on his bike near Madhuravoyil on Poonamalee High Road on Sunday evening.

The police arrested Suresh, 45, of Mettukuppam, Nerkundram, for Raj Kumar’s death and seized kites and manja strings from his shop on Monday.

As many as 23 others were arrested on Monday for selling kites — 17 shopkeepers were arrested by the police in west zone, while north zone police picked up three kite sellers and south and east zone police picked up two and one shopkeeper each, respectively.
