CPM leader Varadarajan dead
Veteran Communist leader N. Varadarajan, 87, died Tuesday morning following a heart attack, a day after he withdrew from party duties at the CPM national conference in Kozhikode citing age and illness. He had joined the party in 1942.
The trade union leader is survived by wife Jagatha and sons Kalyana Sundaram and Bharathi.
Varadarajan, who twice represented Dindigul and once Vedasandur in the legislative Assembly, did not own a house. He would always wear a spotless cotton shirt and a broad smile and was state CPM secretary from 2002 to 2008.
Terming his loss “irreparable”, many CPM leaders recalled Varadarajan as a calm man who took considered decisions in difficult times.
State grieves veteran cpm leader's death
Governor K. Rosaiah, chief minister Jayalalithaa and DMK president M. Karunanidhi condoled the death of veteran CPI (M) leader N. Varadarajan on Tuesday at a private hospital.
Governor Rosaiah condoled the death of the CPM leader, describing his death as an “irreparable loss” to the party.
In his condolence message to the late leader’s wife, the Governor said he was shocked and grieved to hear about the “sudden death” of Varadarajan. “He was known for his simplicity and was a man of principles who had dedicated his life for the cause of the poor and the downtrodden. His death is an “irreparable loss to the people and to CPI (M) in particular,” he said.
Expressing shock, Ms Jayalalithaa, in a condolence message said as a member of the state Assembly he had discharged his responsibilities in an exemplary manner by highlighting the people’s issues.
DMK president M Karunanidhi and his son M.K.Stalin, CPI state secretary D. Pandian and senior CPI leader R. Nallakannu, TNCC president B. S. Gnanadesikan and others paid homage to the deceased leader.
Mr Karunanidhi said Mr Varadarajan also strove hard for the working class and expressed his condolences to the Marxist party workers and his family. Mr Pandian condoled the death and said it was a big loss not only to the Left movement but also to the whole country.
