Councillors hit tender process
Chennai corporation councillors are back in action affecting the tender process and demanding a kickback in contracts, alleged a group of contractors who lodged a complaint with the corporation commissioner P.W.C. Dawidar seeking his intervention.
However, corporation officials assured that steps have been taken to ensure transparency during the submission and opening of tender documents.
Dawidar emphasised that the online tender submission process by the corporation was foolproof and suggested that contractors opt for it.
Moreover tender documents can be dropped at four places in Ripon Buildings and the sale of tenders are videographed to ensure that there is no fear or favour, the commissioner said in a statement.
Preliminary inquiries have proven that the complaints were baseless allegations, he said.
Contractors alleged that the ruling party councillors park their cars nearby, party flags fluttering on the bonnets whenever tender documents are sold at the corporation headquarters.
They come in numbers along with their party members of their respective wards and prevent contractors from submitting tender documents.
This behaviour is not new and even during the DMK regime several complaints were registered against errant councillors influencing contractors.
Two years ago, a group of contractors had approached the city police alleging that a contractor was beaten up after he reportedly refused to give mamool to a DMK member from Kodambakkam.
The then mayor M. Subramanian intervened and insisted the police to take action.
In another case related to T. Nagar also, Subramanian had cancelled all the tenders floated after a section of media reported the involvement of councillors in tender works.
