Corporation readies road plans for Rs 100cr
Chennai roads get repaired and re-laid, only to disintegrate in quick time, thanks to the uninterrupted traffic flow, VIP vehicle movement and of course the rains.
The Chennai corporation which vowed to provide quality roads by mixing plastic to the existing bitumen roads also successfully tried the cement topping road in Velachery. On Thursday it unveiled a Rs 100 crore road development package.
A communiqué from the city corporation on Thursday said tenders have been called for a total of 42 works covering a road distance of 245 kilometres.
As many as 1,105 road works are to be covered under the road package and the works will gain momentum by the end of this month.
Infrastructure works that would prevent flooding on Chennai roads are in progress. Besides, a `90 crore package for concrete roads has been finalised and the tender process for these works would be completed in a month, a senior corporation official said.
“The quality of roads laid in Chennai has always been a topic of debate and several factors continue to affect the quality of roads.
Proposed plastic roads and cement concrete roads would bring a change in Chennai,” the official exuded confidence.
Meanwhile, private contractors who take up civic works related to the city corporation complain that the intervention by Ambattur councillors have delayed the progress of road and stormwater drains in the locality.
“Councillors of both the ruling AIADMK and DMK demand a cut in the contract works and this has affected the progress of all civic works in Ambattur zone”, a contractor seeking anonymity said.
