Coimbatore school acquires LA institution
Foreign education institutions acquiring schools in India is passé, now Indian institutions are buying schools abroad.
With the Kovai-based Indian Public School acquiring South Hill Academy, a 55-year-old school in Los Angeles in the US, academicians say that education too has become corporatized with acquisitions. They add that it is inevitable in the present era of globalisation.
Announcing the acquisition here on Wednesday, Mr Ashok Kumar, chairman of The Indian Public School (TIPS) said that TIPS had floated a 100 per cent subsidiary in the US to own and operate TIPS South Hill Academy.
It had acquired the school at a cost of $10 million as part of its strategy to create a global network of international schools.
Mr Kumar said that the school had looked into various factors when choosing the school.a lot of factors like administration, location and demographics of students.
“Partnering with foreign schools for student exchange programmes or relying on virtual exchanges have its limitations and will not equal the real-world interactions students can get through your own infrastructure.
For instance, with our direct US presence, we can achieve seamless integration of delivery of courses. Students of our Indian campus can opt for continuing their studies in the US for two or three months of an academic year to get US exposure without losing continuity in education,” he said.
A chairman of a reputed group of schools said, “With these acquisitions only the bigger groups will survive and many schools won’t be able to take the heat.”
