CM tells PM to declare sethu national monument
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday to declare the mythological Ram Sethu a national monument.
This effectively means the Rs 30,000-crore Sethu-samudram Shipping Canal Project must be dumped.
Already, about Rs 800 crore has been spent on dredging at Adam’s Bridge amid complaints of widespread corruption and ruining the delicate ecosystem in Gulf of Mannar.
In a letter to PM, Ms Jayalalithaa said the Centre should inform Supreme Court that it would take “immediate steps” to declare the site a national monument “in view of the strong objection raised to the earlier alignment due to its archaeological, historical and cultural importance”.
She said her government would file a separate affidavit before SC in support of this plea.
