CM files defamation case against bi-weekly

Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday filed a defamation complaint before a sessions court against the editor, printer and publisher of Junior Vikatan, a bi-weekly, for allegedly publishing defamatory news in the magazine.

City public prosecutor M.L. Jagan filed the defamation complaint on behalf of the chief minister before the Principal sessions court.

Jagan contended that the editor, printer and publisher of Junior Vikatan have published false and malicious news defaming the chief minister in their edition dated June 24, 2012. The news item stated that Yaham was to be performed in the Poes Garden residence.

A scrutiny of the news reveals that the allegations made against the chief minister were false, malicious and derogatory and that the news was published with an intention to harm the reputation of the chief minister.

At no point of time was Yaham or pooja to be held in the Poes Garden residence of the chief minister and Paiyanur for any purpose as mentioned in the news item.

The public have the highest regard for the chief minister and she has a thumping majority in the Assembly.

Hence, there was no need to perform any Yaham or pooja as mentioned in the publication, Jagan contended.

The publication was entirely based on conjectures and surmises and the news was published solely with an intent to malign the chief minister, Jagan said and sought to punish the trio for offences committed under section 500 and 501 of the IPC.
