City witnesses three break-ins
Thieves struck at three places in the city on Thursday and decamped with valuables worth several lakhs of rupees.
Thieves broke into a hardware store owned by one Vekatesan and fled with Rs4 lakh in cash after a failed attempt to loot a jewellery store in Kolathur.
On Thursday night, workers locked the hardware store at Somanathapuram on the Kolathur-Red Hills Main Road and went home. When they came to work in the morning they were shocked to find that the locks on the side shutters were broken.
Kolathur police conducted investigations. “They had broken open the cupboard and taken `4 lakh in cash and also the cash that was kept in the counter,” police said.
The police team lifted fingerprints from the scene and registered a case. In Kodungaiyur, burglars broke into the house of a textile showroom owner and fled with jewellery and cash.
On Thursday, the showroom owner Chandrasekaran, a resident of Thai Nagar in Kodungaiyur, went out of station with his family to visit an ailing relative. When he came home the following day, he found his house ransacked and his things strewn all over the floor.
“The burglars had taken 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs15, 000 cash,” police said.
In a similar fashion, an unidentified gang broke into the house of financier Surendar Kumar at Gopal Street in Vepery on Thursday. “They fled with 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery, 10 kg of silver and Rs2 lakh in cash,” police said.
