Chennai port driver found with neck slit
Unidentified robbers killed a 55-year-old driver working in Chennai port and escaped with cash of Rs1 lakh and more than 10 sovereigns of gold from his house in Kottivakkam on Monday night.
At 5.30 am on Tuesday, Rani found her husband, Vinayagam’s, body in a pool of blood in their home where the two lived by themselves as their married sons did not live with them. She and Vinayagam had gone to sleep in separate rooms on Monday night.
“She says she found the door of her husband’s room open and blood in his room,” the police said on Tuesday. There was blood on the bed and the pillow.
The family claimed that the robbers had decamped with over 10 sovereigns of gold and cash of `1 lakh. “There was more in the bureau. The robbers failed to notice nearly 35 sovereigns of gold and cash kept in another side of the bureau,” the police said.
The killers seem to have entered the house by breaking open the rear door. The criminals had slashed Vinayagam’s neck before escaping with the valuables. “It is not clear why the killers did not attack Rani who was sleeping in the other room wearing her ornaments,” the police said.
Senior police officers, including joint commissioner of police, South, fingerprint experts and sniffer dogs, were present at the scene of crime on Tuesday morning.
