Chennai boy is 3rd on MBBS list
Boys dominated the MBBS/ BDS merit list released by health minister V.S. Vijay on Monday. Seven boys and three girls who scored 200 on 200 marks in Class 12 Science bagged the top 10 ranks and will make it to the best government medical college in the state.
However, 18,061 girls have applied for medical and dental courses, as compared to only 9,816 boys.
R. Gowtham of the SKV Higher Secondary School in Namakkal was ranked first (according to his age) and his classmate S. Sushmita came second.
The third ranker, T. Nagar resident Ashish Rajesh from DAV Gopalapuram was the only Chennai student in the top 10. K. Jagannathan from Krishnagiri and V.S. Permeo from Nagerkoil came fourth and fifth.
“Counselling for special seats will be conducted on July 5; we have allotted three seats each for categories such as children of freedom fighters, children of the armed forces and sportspersons. Three per cent of the total number of seats will be given to disabled students,” said the health minister.
There seems to be stiff competition for the 1,696 medical seats from the 17 government run medical colleges this year, the state may be able to add an additional 150 seats.
“We have already received a letter of intent for 50 additional seats at Chengalpet medical college from the Medical Council of India, we are sure to get the letter of permission shortly. We are also waiting for the green signal to admit 100 students to Sivagangai medical college. The inspections are complete and we have time until July 15 to complete admissions,” he said.
The seats given to the government pool by the self financed colleges — 11 medical colleges and 18 dental colleges — will be confirmed the day before the counseling starts.
The first phase of counseling will last 10 days, and the DME has sent letters to each applicant’s house, informing them of their counseling dates.
Applicants can also log onto www.tnhealth.org or www.tn.gov.in to check for their turn.
