CB-CID to probe student’s death
The state DGP has transferred to the CB-CID the investigation of the mysterious death of an engineering student who was found dead inside a toilet in a private engineering college near here.
Justice Nagamuthu recorded the statement of the government advocate that the state DGP on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, had issued an order to transfer the case to the CB-CID from the file of inspector of police, Ambattur. The judge then dismissed a related petition as infructuous.
P. Saravanan, a second-year mechanical engineering student of the private college was found dead in October 2011. His father S. Ponnurangam, who could get a copy of the autopsy report only in January 2012, moved the high court seeking the transfer of the case to a neutral agency such as CB-CID.
Ponnurangam alleged indifference on the party of Ambattur police and said the police were facing extraneous pressure to close the matter as a case of natural death.
The judge criticised the deputy commissioner of police (Ambattur) among other police personnel for the shoddy investigation of the case and observed that poor probe by police had resulted in abysmally poor conviction rate in criminal cases.
