Carjacker in police net
A carjacker who demanded Rs 3 lakh for returning the Toyota Innova that he had stolen was arrested by the police on Tuesday.
The thief, a mechanical engineering graduate residing at Aminjikarai, said he wanted the money to pay for the bond to take up employment in a company.
Saran Raj, 23, the son of an employee in the commercial tax department, had stolen the SUV belonging to one Aruna Sree, wife of businessman Ravi of Jawahar Nagar in Peravallur on June 17 night.
The youth had stolen the key from the car service centre where he had worked earlier and made a duplicate key.
He then got the address of the vehicle owner through a person in the RTO. On June 17, the youth went to the businessman’s home and, using the duplicate key, drove away the SUV that was parked outside.
The carjacker then replaced the vehicle registration number plate with a fake one and was trying to sell the vehicle.
“However, he was finding it difficult to sell the car as he did not have the registration certificate. Thus, the youth decided to call up the owner and demanded Rs 3 lakh to return the vehicle,” police said.
Following the carjacker’s instructions, Aruna Sree went to the spot in Anna Nagar while police personnel who had tailed her in civvies nabbed the youth.
The carjacker confessed to the crime and said he was trying to gather the money that a manpower recruitment agency had demanded to ensure that he gets a job.
