Call for youth to donate blood
The state has 272 blood banks, of which 85 are government owned, but one still cannot conclude that Tamil Nadu is self sufficient in blood donation, said health minister Dr V.S. Vijay at the third anniversary of the blood donor’s club at the Madras Medical College.
“Even if 1 per cent of the population in every district donates blood, there won’t be any problem in meeting the needs of people who need blood, especially in maternal operations, said the minister.
Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said that road accidents took place frequently and there was constant need of blood.
“Blood cannot be manufactured. So donation is the only way to save the lives of these accident victims,” he said.
In the 344 blood donation camps that were conducted by the club, 35,000 units of blood were collected.
Several arts colleges in the city are part of the donors club, which has 2,500 active members who donate as many as four times a year.
“A single unit of blood can be separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets and can be used to save many lives.
So everyone, especially youngsters, should come forward to donate blood,” said Dr. Kanagasabai, Dean of GH.
Experts also pointed out that the government has an online blood donation registry where donors could register through the Internet and provide details of their blood group so this can be easily identified in emergencies.
