CABE set to ratify joint entrance exam proposal
The Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), which meets on April 23 at New Delhi, is expected to pass a resolution to hold common entrance test - joint entrance examination - for all technical educational institutions across the country, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), which has relented to the proposal.
The human resource development (HRD) ministry tabled its proposal in the IIT council on September 18 last year.
The council accepted the report of the Ramasami committee and decided that the report be placed in CABE and before state education ministers so that the new system could be put in place by 2013-14. As a follow-up, the proposal will be tabled in CABE on April 23 for ratification.
JEE will consist of two papers - main and advance. The main paper will be an examination for 180 minutes with an objective to test foundational understanding of the candidate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
The test will be designed by not only the subject experts but could also involve participation of experts in Psychometry.
The advance paper will also be for 180 minutes and have the same syllabus as the main paper. The questions will test the problem-solving abilities of the students besides skills in problem formulation and incisive thinking.
Candidates will submit separate application forms for taking JEE, for admission to the participating Centrally-funded institute and other institutions. Application for JEE will result in allotment of a JEE reference number. After obtaining this number, a candidate has to apply for admission in the participating institute quoting this number.
In addition to the marks in the three components, an institute rank will also be provided to each candidate.
The rank will be determined by using the following weightages - board marks: 40 per cent, main test: 30 per cent, advance test: 30 per cent.
The JEE apex board will be constituted by IIT-NIT councils and be responsible for the overall policies and statutory responsibilities for conducting the examination. The IITs, NITs and IIITs will have online counselling through a single window based on the institute rank.
