Bus stop near liquor shop riles commuters
Commuters boarding buses at the Vanuvampet stop often have a tough time as it is located near a Tasmac shop.
“Earlier, we used to board buses opposite Vanuvampet Church, but the stop has been shifted near Veerangal Odai Bridge.
As we are regular commuters we know that the buses from Keelkattalai will stop near the Tasmac shop but it is very difficult for a newcomer to locate the bus stop as there’s no board or a bus shelter.
Moreover, the wine shop is too crowded in the evenings and it’s not safe for women to wait there for long,” said Ms R. Lakshmi, a regular commuter.
“In order to ease traffic congestion on Medavakkam Main Road, the bus stop has been shifted but residents of Vanuvampet have to walk quite a long way to reach the stop.
During peak hours we struggle to find a place as the road is always congested and also the stench coming from the waste dumped near the bridge makes commuters uneasy,” pointed out another commuter, Mr Ram.
Mr Raghavan, a resident of Surendra Nagar said, “Veerangal canal has to be de-silted before the monsoon. It’s not maintained properly and wastes are being dumped into the canal.
Hundreds of commuters use the bus stop to reach St. Thomas Railway Station and I hope the authorities take some action.”
