Blind school eyes Rs2 cr state funds
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has announced a grant of Rs2 crore towards renovating and maintaining the Government School for the Visually-challenged in Poonamallee.
According to an official press release here on Sunday, the chief minister said a multi-purpose hostel would be constructed at a cost of Rs1.5 crore, besides Rs20 lakhs would be spent on upgrading the kitchen and equipping it with modern gadgets, and about Rs10 lakhs each would be spent on a teacher-training laboratory and equipment for the school library and laboratory.
The school was started about 124 years ago and the campus also accommodates many government institutions. It has been rendering yeoman service while also producing several toppers.
To ensure overall development of the differently-abled, AIADMK government had previously constituted a separate organisation in 1993 and formulated a policy for their welfare, the release said.
