Big drive begins against flies
Fighting a losing battle against mosquitoes, the city corporation kick-started Thursday a drive against the dreaded flies.
Launching the drive at Koyambedu, Chennai mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy said that the drive was aimed to curb the incidence of breeding.
Flies usually breed during this season and there is a need to control the insects as they spread cholera and water-borne diseases. Further, the drive would help the city corporation to improve sanitation, he said.
Squads have been formed to execute the drive and the teams will frequent markets, slaughterhouses and garbage transfer stations to spray insecticides.
Since close to 140 tonnes of vegetable and fruit waste is generated in Koyambedu fruit market alone, a squad will exclusively be positioned at the market, the mayor added.
According to corporation health department sources, the civic body has roped in 600 workers to fumigate insecticides and clear water hyacinths in water bodies. The team includes 123 sanitary inspectors, 21 conservancy officials and eight ward welfare officers.
Mr Duraisamy also heard public grievances from shop owners and assured them that he would take up the issue with the state housing minister to review the market and sort out the pending civic issues.
