Bid to make bomb injures two
Police arrested two men who sustained injuries after a bomb they were trying to make went off accidentally in the room where they were staying on New Avadi Road in Kilpauk early on Friday morning.
The blast took place around 1 am when the two — Sathya, 32, and Sugandhan, 27 — were trying to make the explosive in the rented room.
Sathya and Sugandhan, both are from Thoothukudi. Sathya, a driver, is accused in a murder case in Anna Nagar, while Sugandhan was accused in murder case in Thoothukudi.
“It seems that Sugandhan, who was Sathya’s guest, was making a bomb that went off accidentally. His hands were bleeding profusely and he came out running to the street and told the onlookers that the TV set in their room had exploded accidentally,” police sources said.
“Sathya was also injured. Seeing them bleeding, people called the ambulance service 108 and sent them to hospital,” said the police.
Hospital authorities, after examining the wounds, became suspicious and informed the police. The police team and a bomb detection squad that reached the spot found leftover chemicals with which the two were trying to make an explosive.
The police said Sugandhan, who was a known history sheeter in Thoothkudi, feared an attack on him by a rival gang and was getting ready to defend himself with bombs, police sources said.
“His father was killed by a rival gang a few months ago. He feared that the same gang could attack him. So he was making bomb — using chemicals from crackers he purchased for Rs200 form a shop in city — for a counter attack. Both his hands were seriously damaged in the explosion early om Friday morning,” the police said.
