BE.counselling likely at 4 towns
Students hoping to join engineering colleges, may have an easier time attending counselling from next year as the government is considering decentralising the process.
While students from all over the state currently travel all the way to Chennai for single window counselling, in future they may be able to attend counselling at Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy as well.
In an informal chat with Deccan Chronicle, higher education minister P. Palaniappan said the government had taken note of the inconvenience caused to engineering aspirants who came for counselling to Chennai from around the state.
“I spoke to many students who were here for counselling from places like Kanyakumari and Dharmapuri and they told me they need to take a room in a lodge for Rs 300 to Rs 400 and spend at least another Rs 600 on transportation from their towns to the city.
We are exploring the possibility of conducting counselling in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy”, he said, revealing that Anna University had been asked to work out details of conducting counselling in the four cities and this would be discussed with chief minister J. Jayalalithaa before a decision is taken.
“We are also exploring the possibility of conducting online counselling but as there are several issues like security and impersonation involved , this is unlikely to materialise in the near future,” the minister added.
Anna University had conducted counselling in the four cities for over a decade until the previous DMK government decided to hold centralised counselling in Chennai two years ago.
