Artistes honoured with Thamizhan awards
Oscar winner A. R. Rahman and Magsaysay Award winner Dr V. Shantha were among the celebrities to win the first edition of Thamizhan awards instituted by Puthiya Thalaimurai television.
The star-studded awards ceremony, which took place in the city on Friday evening, also witnessed a rare recognition of genuine talent like that of Muruganandam whose Jayashree industries invented the indigenous low-cost sanitary napkins for the benefit of the rural women. The awards were given to two persons in each category — Saadhanai Thamizhan (achiever) and Nambikkai Natchathiram (promising star).
A R. Rahman was honoured with Saadhanai Thamizhan in the arts category. Veteran director K. Balachander presented him the award. Chandra of Sakthi Kalaikuzhu, Tamil Nadu’s first all-woman parai group, was awarded with Nambikai natchathiram award in Arts category. Writer Sirpi Balasubramaniam presented the award to her.
Indian hockey captain Baskar conferred the Sadhanai Thamizhan award in sports category on Vishwanathan Anand. Athelete Gayathri Govindaraj won the Nambikkai Natchathiram award in the sports category. The young girl said she had toiled on the track from class 2 in school and “this is the first time I received such recognition”.
Veteran writer D. Jayakanthan was conferred the Sadhanai Thamizhan award in literature category and none other than writer Sivasankari presented him the award. Su Venkatesan who won Sahitya academy this year for his novel Kaaval Kottam was presented the Nambikkai Natchathiram award in literature by poet and lyricist Vairamuthu.
SRM group chairman T.R. Pachamuthu presented the Sadhanai Thamizhan award (business category) to TVS group’s Venu Srinivasan. Muruganandam was presented the Nambikai natchathiram award in the same category by Puthiya Thalaimurai managing director Sathyanarayanan.
Father of green revolution M. S. Swaminathan won the Sadhanai Thamizhan award in Science and Technology category. Maalan, editor, Puthiya Thalaimurai magazine, presented the award to him.
Revathi of Nagappatinam won the Nambikai Natchathiram award in the category for her pioneering efforts in organic farming. Magsaysay award winner Dr Shantha got Sadhanai Thamizhar award in the social service category. Sevalaya founder V. Muralidharan won the Nambikai Natchathiram award in the same category.
