Anti inter -caste marriage campaign begins

Entering schools and colleges to conduct campaigns against inter-caste marriages was among the six resolutions passed by the Kongu Vellalar Peravai, a Gounder caste group, on Sunday in Namakkal.

Pongalur R. Manikandan, state president of the peravai said, “We should talk to school and college students and ask them to avoid inter-caste marriages.

They should get married only within our castes to protect our tradition and cultural values. All of us should work towards gathering young Gounders to strengthen our movement.” He said avoiding inter-caste marriages would ‘help’ in preventing caste clashes.

According to the peravai, the Kongu Velar community has shrunk in numbers because of the family planning programme.

“All our members should ensure that we have two children in each family to add numbers to our community. Many of our families have just one child,” he said.
