Ambattur suffers political neglect
The residents of Ambattur, already reeling under sewer overflow, also suffer sleepless nights owing to the mosquito menace and the stench from stagnant garbage that hits them hard. But the councillors of Dravidian majors in the zone are not helping them find any solutions.
“Though Ambattur is fast developing into a major industrial hub, it still lags behind other zones in terms of basic infrastructure such as drainage network, proper roads and garbage disposal,” laments Sudeesh, a resident of Padi.
The areas around Athipet dumping yard are engulfed by smoke emanating from the garbage that burns throughout the day. There is no respite despite several representations. The dump yard has polluted the air and water in the locality, said Padma, who runs a petty shop on Vanagaram Road.
When contacted, Joseph Samuel, Zonal chairman (DMK) said, “AIADMK councillors have boycotted the last three zonal level meetings. Without the co-operation of the councillors, we are unable to pass any resolution on developmental projects. The rivalry is now taking a toll on the public welfare activities.”
However, on a query regarding allotment of funds, he said that the government has allotted Rs83 crore for laying quality roads, which has been put on hold to make way for the underground drainage works being carried out by Chennai metro water.
