9 die as gallery collapses in indoor stadium
Nine persons were killed and 10 injured when a gallery under construction in an indoor stadium collapsed on Monday.
The baseball stadium was being constructed at the private Jeppiaar Institute of Technology in Kunnam near Sunguvachatram in Kanchipuram when the scaffolding collapsed, leaving many workers under the debris on Monday evening.
Six workers identified as Mandu, 32, Bangilu, 30, Sankarji, 25, Sagar,23, Sathya Dutt, 45 and Sagar, 28 died on the spot, while three died in hospital. All the victims are from Assam. The police are yet to identify three people killed in the mishap.
At least 50 persons were working at the site when the mishap took place.
The construction of the stadium was going on for a month. Concreting work at the stadium, which measures 100 by 100 feet and is 40 feet high was going on at a fast pace when the scaffolding collapsed.
Fire and rescue service personnel were using earth movers to remove debris but were not sure if there were more victims. “We hope that nobody else is trapped under the debris,” the police said.
Immediately after the collapse, the labour contractor went underground, police said.
“Labour contractor Sudhakar who had the information about the workers is missing since the accident. We are on the lookout for him,” the police said.
A senior police official said that they were initially focusing on the rescue. “Our aim is to save the maximum number of lives. We need the labour contractor to identify the victims in the hospital. We will look at the other legal formalities on Tuesday,” the police said.
