77 years of glory: Co-optex sales to cross record Rs 1,000 crore
The Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society Ltd, popularly known as Co-optex, has made history of sorts.
It’s overall turnover is expected to cross Rs 1,000 crore this year as against Rs 621 crore last year.
The overall turnover, which includes business from the state government for its free sari and dhoti schemes, is expected to cross Rs 1,000 crore, against Rs 621 crore last year.
The apex organisation of the handloom sector in the state has registered retail sales of Rs 201 crore for the 2011-12 financial year and this is marginally up from the previous year’s Rs 198 crore.
For the first time Co-optex’s retail sales has crossed the Rs 200-crore mark in its 77-year-old history, according to a release.
Known for its silk and cotton sarees and home linen, Co-optex is engaged in modernising its retail stores to attract the younger generation. It has opened contemporary showrooms in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Erode.
It recently launched the ‘Buy 2, Get 1 Free’ scheme which has brought large number of customers to Co-optex showrooms.
Meanwhile, Handloom Export Promotion Council organised a fashion show on hand-woven products of the Indian handloom industry showcasing the works of young designer Vivek Karunakaran, here.
The exhibition also showcased the Mal-Mal collection titled ‘Pehchaan’ which inspired by the beauty of hand woven Mal Mal fabric is created by Vivek Karunakaran thus bringing to life the romance and lifestyle of this magnificent fabric interplayed with brocades and silk.
The collection showcases hand woven Mal-Mal fabrics in tones of Eckru, Beige, sandal, red, hot pink and black.
