72-yr-old woman found murdered

A 72-year-old woman was found murdered in her house in Pammal near Pallavaram on Saturday night.

The police suspect that a male servant who had been sacked could have murdered the woman to steal the cash kept in the bureau.

Yuan Fernandez, a spinster, used to stay in the first floor of the house in Anna Nagar, Pammal, while her three younger sisters stayed on the ground floor. She usually had her food downstairs with her sisters.

On Saturday evening, after the three sisters came back to church and found that Yuan did not turn up even at 11 pm, they got worried. The sisters went up to her bedroom and found her dead.. The bureau was ransacked and everything was strewn around.

According to the police, Yuan had asked her servant Shivakumar, 40, not to come for work from Sunday as she was not happy with his behaviour. Shivakumar had left in the evening. “It seems he returned when the three sisters had gone to church and murdered Yuan to steal money,” the police said.

Shivakumar was arrested four months ago after Yuan had lodged a complaint with the local station when she found that he was stealing from her house.

He returned after his short jail term and pleaded with her for the job. Last month she agreed to re-employ him but as she was unhappy with his behaviour, she decided to let him go.

The police on Sunday said that they had picked up Shivakumar in connection with the murder. “He had strangulated her to death as he was angry over the sacking,” police said.
